Nyetimber was designed, planted and built specifically to make world-class sparkling wine to rival Champagne . The vineyard has a terroir similar to those in Champagne . There are over 50 acres in production and all grapes are trellised on the single Guyot System identical to that used in the Champagne area. The estate was planted in 1992 by Americans Stuart and Sandy Moss, after a prolonged search for a site capable of rivalling the best estates in France .
The custom built winery has been erected using current state of the art methods. The production methods indeed exceed the French rules including maturing the wines for at least 5 years - double the minimum required for champagne.
The vineyard has won countless awards since the first release of its Wines in 1996. It has won Gold Medals in international competition with the best champagnes. Most recently the vineyard won 4 of the 11 most prestigious trophies in the 2004 English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition.
